Small changes Continued

A couple days in on this experiment snd I’m learning about myself.

I look at my phone more than I wish I did.

I open it up and start searching. I’m filling the role of consumer far too easily.

My future context requires production to achieve. This blog including.

I’m resolved to occasionally switch the location on my consumption encouraging apps. It doesn't take me long to find them, but the act of looking is a stronger signal to my conscious that I’m consuming.

Our modern age lacks appropriate feedback signaling.

You have to engineer that feedback for yourself.

What small subtle changes can you make in your life to engineer feedback?

Small changes

I spend far too much time on social media.

I’m sure I’m not the only one. Twitter is my social addiction of choice.

It was on my homescreen on my phone.

But not anymore.

I’m changing my homescreen in an attempt to change my behavior. I’ve got 3 pages of icons that I have to scroll thru to find my social addictions, but I’ve put this app on my homescreen. Right where Twitter used to be actually.

I want to be more productive in a meaningful way. And Twitter ain’t it!

This means that this page will be getting a lot more of my “preformed” thoughts. And typos.

Good luck.

You’re gonna need it.

Why did I do this?

Beyond just the addiction dynamic, I didn’t like who I was becoming on Twitter. I was becoming argumentative. Like, argumentative for arguments sake.

I ended up arguing against my own strongly held positions.

My fight had overcome my mind.

I want my mind to direct my fight. Not the other way around.

The new tagline of this site is “Context matters. It really does".

This is my new mantra.

I had known this intellectually before. But I need to imprint this in my soul. I need to make it bedrock.

What are your mantras? The things that you need to make bedrock?

The Best Possible Execution

Once more into the breach…

Remember, we are contending with the powerful equation...

The highest possible aim + The best possible execution = The best chance for the highest possible outcome.

Review the previous exchange here.

Let’s all continue on together with “The Best Possible Execution”.

The fundamental requirement of any system that makes the claim of “Best possible execution” is that it matches the basic structure of reality. For instance, a scientific framework that ignores the last 100 years of advancement, will not be as effective as one that takes those advancements into account. Management frameworks are no different. The problem we all face is the limitation that we encounter when a finite being, such as ourselves, comes face to face with the infinite nature of reality. Our finite experience is always shadowed by infinite reality. This has been a problem since the dawn of humankind. In fact, our mythological stories were an attempt by our ancient forefathers to describe this problem. They battled this problem through narrative. We, my brothers and sisters, will battle it through a framework.

The problem lies in the fact that the cumulative actions of all people in the world create a complexity that is too large to grasp. It shrouds the results of our actions in mystery. Add in natural forces like weather, and you compound the complexity even further. Because of that complexity, you are never fully aware of all the outside actions that will influence your decisions. It is impossible. You are stuck with a fragmentary and imperfect knowledge of reality. Everyone is. It is within this imperfect knowledge that you are required to make management decisions. There are an infinite number of variables that you may not be aware of that increase the risk involved with making decisions. This is the context within which you must act.

Your decisions contain three essential parts, not including your target, the Future Context:

The context, which we just defined.

The subject, which is you.

The object of your action, the aspect of reality that you want to influence with your action. These aren’t physical objects, they are meta-objects.

The objects of your decisions in the Regenerative Resource Management framework are the System Processes. System Processes are systems that exist independently of you, you influence these systems thru your actions, and in turn are influenced by the collective nature of these systems. These system processes were introduced in the Highest Possible Aim: Social systems, Financial systems, and Environmental systems. These are the meta-objects upon which you, the subject will act.

Ideally, the nature of your actions and decision making would bring about the state of being you identified in your Future Context. Your decisions and the actions that follow will influence those systems either toward or away from the state of being you identified.

To keep you on track during the decision making process the RRM framework utilizes Testing Guidelines. They are incorporated in such a way that they lead you toward the creation of your Future Context. Everyone’s testing guidelines will be unique to their own context. The Testing Guidelines are a series of heuristics designed to refine your decisions. Heuristics are quick and  simple rules for general cases. We use heuristics because humans are dumb, but we think we’re smart!

You see, we have 2 systems in our brains. System 1 is fast and sassy. It makes snap decisions and looks for patterns. System 2 is slow and methodical. It’s analytical and rational. It’s also very expensive, energy wise. Your system 2 brain uses a lot of calories. Unfortunately, we think we use system 2 as we make our daily decisions, but we’re just lying to ourselves. In reality we are controlled by system 1 more than we are aware of and our system 2 makes post-decision rationalizations for our actions. This can be a bitter pill to swallow for many, it was for me, but acceptance of this fact will bring us in greater alignment with reality. Embrace the mystery. This is an important requirement to instituting the best possible execution.

That is why we use the heuristics. Resource management is an ongoing process that requires an adaptive response to those influences that you are unaware of. Heuristics, by their nature, are incomplete, but we know they are incomplete. The point is that they’re fast, not complete. If we stopped our momentum to gain a perfect knowledge, not only is that impossible, but the pursuit of it would grind all progress to a halt. The RRM framework uses our system 2 brain, the rational and logical brain, to create the heuristics. We use system 1 brain, the pattern recognizing fast brain, to implement those heuristics.

Once a decision has been made, by using the Testing Guidelines, it must be implemented properly . . . enter the Management Guidelines. Management guidelines are also heuristics but are born from your experience with management. These guidelines offer a shortcut to the implementation of historical knowledge, if you will. Management guidelines gleaned from others examples and experience can be valuable, but keep in mind that their context is not the same as your context. You may need to adapt them as you go.

Testing guidelines keep you on track with the decision making process while management guidelines keep you on track with the implementation.

Even with all of the guidelines and heuristics to hone and form your decisions you will still be acting with imperfect knowledge. Because of that, you will be wrong. Or more accurately, partially incorrect. Imperfect knowledge literally guarantees inaccuracy in all our actions. Read that sentence again.

Enter the feedback loop

We start the feedback loop with the assumption that yes, we are indeed incorrect. Somehow. Some way. Therefore, we will be looking for instances of incorrectness ??? bad moves?? Wrongness??? Missteps??? However, you want to describe the state of imperfection. The point is that it's there.

After we find evidence of incorrectness we incorporate that new knowledge into our decision making and adjust our actions or discard the action entirely.

Why is the RRM system the Best Possible Execution?

Regenerative Resource Management is the best because it acknowledges the fact that imperfect knowledge is a universal condition and that the human mind has specific limitations furthermore it sets forth an adaptive response plan in order to deal with these realities.
